Troubleshooting

Subscription Update Failed and All Nodes Down? Here's How to Fix It

This is one of the most frequently reported issues. In most cases, it's not that the software is broken — it's a few easily overlooked details. Work through the steps below and you'll usually find the cause.

Typical Symptoms

The most common reports fall into two categories: tapping "Update Subscription" results in a failure message, or the update appears to "succeed" but the node list ends up empty, or with just one or two obviously broken nodes. The causes behind these two scenarios overlap somewhat — we'll break them down separately below.

Check These Common Causes First

  1. The Subscription Link Itself Is Incomplete

When manually copying a subscription link — especially via screenshot text recognition or messages forwarded across devices — it's easy to lose characters at the start or end, pick up extra spaces, or have a stray line break inserted automatically. It's best to get the link directly from the original source using "long-press/right-click → Copy Link" rather than typing it yourself or copying it from another channel.

  2. The Subscription Itself Has Expired or Been Disabled

This is the most common reason for "update succeeds but the node list is empty" — the client itself is working fine, it's just that the content it fetched really is empty or no longer valid. Check whether your subscription is still within its valid period; you may need to contact your node/service provider to confirm its status or get a new one.

  3. The Current Network Can't Reach the Subscription URL

Updating a subscription is itself a network request. If your current network has unstable access to that address (for example, some public Wi-Fi networks impose extra restrictions), the update will simply fail. Try switching to a different network (like moving from Wi-Fi to mobile data) and retry, to rule out a network issue.

  4. System Time Is Incorrect

This one is easy to overlook: some subscription services validate the request timestamp, and if your device's system time/timezone is noticeably off, the request may get flagged as invalid. Check whether your system time is set to "automatic," or try correcting it manually.

Troubleshoot in This Order

If you're not sure which cause applies, work through the following steps in order — you'll usually pinpoint the issue within two or three steps:

  • Re-copy the subscription link in full from the original source, then delete the old subscription entry and add it again.
  • Switch networks and try updating again.
  • Check that your system time settings are correct.
  • If all of the above check out and it still fails, the issue is almost certainly with the subscription itself — contact your node/service provider.
A Quick Note If you can connect but only a specific node fails, that's usually an issue with that single node — you don't need to go through the subscription troubleshooting steps above. Just switch to another node in the list. See Connection Troubleshooting for more scenarios.

How to Reduce Future Issues Like This

It's hard to eliminate subscription issues entirely, but a few good habits can significantly reduce how often they happen:

  • Always get your subscription link from the same source: avoid forwarding it multiple times, taking screenshots, or copying across apps, which reduces the chance of the link getting truncated or altered.
  • Don't frequently edit anything other than the subscription's label: the subscription URL itself shouldn't be manually edited — any character that "looks extra" might actually be part of the link.
  • Read the error message before retrying: most clients show a brief error (e.g., timeout, invalid format) when an update fails. Checking it first helps you quickly tell whether it's a network issue or a link issue, saving you time on blind retries.
  • Don't expect it to never fail: brief hiccups on the subscription server side are normal — waiting a few minutes and retrying is often more effective than repeatedly fiddling with client settings.

Still Not Working After Troubleshooting? Here's What That Means

If you've gone through the entire sequence above and the update still fails or nodes are still broken, you can rule out the client software itself — the same client works fine with a healthy subscription. At this point, the problem is almost certainly on the subscription link or provider's side. Continuing to try different client settings usually won't help; the right move is to contact your node/service provider directly, explain that "the link has been verified through the standard process and still won't update," and ask them to confirm the subscription status or issue a new link. Focusing your effort in the right place saves a lot of wasted time.

Re-Adding a Subscription vs. Editing the Existing One — Which Is Safer?

When an update fails, most people's first instinct is to find the existing subscription entry in the client and edit the URL field directly. This usually works too, but a safer approach is to delete the old entry first and then add a brand-new one with the link pasted in. The reason is that some clients retain cached state (like a "last update failed" flag) when you "edit" an existing entry, and creating a new one avoids that kind of cached interference, making success on the first try more likely. If you've already customized any settings on that subscription entry (like a separate update interval), make a note of them before deleting it so you can set them again after re-adding.

How Often Should You Update a Subscription?

There's no one-size-fits-all answer — it depends on how often your node/service provider refreshes their node list. If they update nodes daily or hourly, you should update at a similar frequency, or you'll end up with a stale node list. Most clients let you set an "auto-update" interval (e.g., once a day, or every time the app launches). Turning this on means you don't have to tap update manually every time, saving repetitive effort and keeping your node list current.
